When a schematic does not show up in Litematica, the file is almost never broken — it is in the wrong folder, it was never loaded through the menu, or a placement exists but its rendering is switched off. These three causes look identical from the player’s seat (“my schematic isn’t there”), so this guide separates them in the order you should check them: folder first, loading flow second, rendering third.
Cause 1: The File Is Not in the Schematics Folder
Litematica reads schematic files from one place: the schematics folder inside your game directory — by default .minecraft/schematics. A .litematic file sitting in Downloads, on the desktop, or inside mods is invisible to the mod.
- Find your game directory. For the standard launcher it is
.minecraft(on Windows, type%appdata%\.minecraftin File Explorer’s address bar; on macOS it is~/Library/Application Support/minecraft). - Open the
schematicsfolder inside it — create it if it does not exist yet — and move your.litematicfile there. - Custom launcher warning: if you play through Prism, MultiMC or a similar launcher, each instance has its own game folder, and its
schematicsfolder is the one that counts. Use the launcher’s option to open the instance folder and navigate from there. Files placed in the default.minecraftwill never appear in that instance.
Also check the file name itself. The extension must be .litematic. Two classic traps: Windows hides known extensions, so a file can secretly be house.litematic.txt; and a download can end up double-zipped. Litematica’s native format is .litematic, and it also opens legacy .schematic files; other formats such as .schem are not guaranteed to load in every version, so if a file in another format will not appear, converting it to .litematic (or asking the author for a .litematic export) is the reliable route. The full loading workflow is in how to load schematics.
Cause 2: The File Is There, but You Have Not Loaded It
Putting the file in the folder does not place anything in your world by itself. The flow is: open the Litematica main menu (M), choose Load Schematics, select your file, and load it — this creates a placement. Only then does a hologram exist in the world. If the file list inside Load Schematics is empty even though the file is in the folder, you are looking at the wrong instance’s folder (back to Cause 1) or the file was added while the list was already open — back out and reopen the menu so the list refreshes. A file that is genuinely damaged will typically fail at this step with an error rather than silently; that case, and files saved by a newer Litematica than yours, are covered under unsupported schematic version.
Cause 3: The Placement Exists, but Nothing Renders
If the placement is listed in the Placements menu (M + P) yet no ghost blocks appear in the world, rendering is off somewhere:
- Schematic rendering toggle: press
M + Gto toggle schematic rendering, andM + Rto toggle all Litematica rendering. Either can be switched off accidentally. - Placement disabled: each placement has its own enable state in the Placements menu. A disabled placement renders nothing.
- Render Layers: in the config (
M + C), the Render Layers setting may be on Single Layer or “All Below” a specific height. You will then only see one slice of the building — stand inside that slice’s height range (Page Up / Page Down move the layer) or switch the mode to render all layers to confirm the hologram is really there. The layer mode guide explains the modes in full. - Shaders on 1.21.3+: on Minecraft 1.21.3 and newer, Litematica’s rendering does not work correctly with shaders enabled (including Iris shader packs). Turn shaders off to test — if the hologram appears, that was the cause. This is an official known limitation, not your install.
- You are simply somewhere else: a placement renders where it was created. If you loaded the schematic while standing in a different world or far from where you are now, the hologram is waiting at the placement’s coordinates, not next to you. Use the Placements menu to check and move it.
Quick Checklist
File in .minecraft/schematics (of the right instance) → extension really is .litematic → loaded via Load Schematics → placement enabled → M + G / M + R rendering on → Render Layers not slicing it away → shaders off on 1.21.3+. If the mod itself seems absent rather than just the schematic, start from Litematica not working; everything else is indexed on the troubleshooting hub.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where do I put .litematic files?
In the schematics folder inside your game directory: .minecraft/schematics by default. With a custom launcher, use the schematics folder inside that instance’s own game folder instead.
The file is in the folder but the list is empty. What now?
You are most likely looking at a different instance’s folder than the one you launched, or the file’s extension is not really .litematic (Windows may hide a trailing .txt). Verify the folder through your launcher’s open-folder option and check the full file name.
The placement exists but I see no hologram. Why?
Rendering is off somewhere: toggle schematic rendering with M + G (all rendering with M + R), make sure the placement is enabled in the Placements menu (M + P), and check that Render Layers is not slicing the build to a single layer. On 1.21.3+, also test with shaders off.
